Mets Get Matthews Jr

According to John Heyman of SI, the Mets have acquired Gary Matthews Jr from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. I don't understand this deal. Unless they are going to use this trade to get a starting pitcher it just doesn't make any sense. The Angels will be picking up a substantial amount of his salary but why would want to take on any money of this contract when Angel Pagan can easily play centerfield until Beltran returns from injury. I really hope they are going to use this trade to pull of another deal to bring in a starting pitcher because this literally makes no sense to me. Pagan is probably better anyway. I just don't get it.
